Abilities Midwest, Inc was created by Brandon & Katelyn Schmidt. Katelyn has a cousin with PWS, and was curious what his life may look like living in a group home one day. Through her research, she found a residential provider who specialized in PWS, and applied for a position to see what it was all about. She fell in love with the human services field. Over the years of working in the caregiving field, she met Brandon - who was passionate about fitness & athletics. The two combined their passions, taking what they loved & didn't love about previous workplaces, as well as continued education on the syndrome - to create what is now known as Abilities Midwest, Inc. The Schmidts wanted to create an environment where residents knew that they were not just a number, or a bed to fill, but rather human beings who deserved to feel valued. They also strived to create a workplace to where their employees felt happy to come into work.
They are strong believers that when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.
Since opening it's first program in July of 2021, Abilities Midwest has grown to 4 programs and counting. Abilities Midwest is committed to upholding it's values - regardless of it's growth. Abilities Midwest is a family owned company, where every level of the team is expected to do what matters most - spend time caring for the residents. To date, Brandon & Katelyn are still actively involved with the staff, residents, and families - and they aren't going anywhere!
Outside of owning Abilities Midwest, The Schmidts are licensed foster & adoptive parents. They enjoy spending time with their children and animals, traveling, and advocating for those that need it most.
